'Ex tenebris' 2021.
The painting was created in answer to a brief that gave the following statement:
PRELUDE
prɛljuːd | breathe new life into 2021
Imbued with Hope. A new start.
prelude', adoption (16th century) from Late Latin praelūdium, to Latin praelūdere 'to play for practice or rehearsal, to make a prelude, to hold', also 'to prepare' (cf. Latin lūdere 'to play').
The use of the figurative meaning 'what precedes a process', also 'sign, beginning' also goes back to the 16th century.
Post pandemic we are looking to a new start, hoping for a new start, being sold the new start idea. But before then we should be looking at the other global issues that threaten us all. In the artist's eyes we have an even larger hill to climb or longer journey ahead. Yes, there is always hope but we must not lose sight of the path or we risk being lost. This painting brings us back down to where we are not where we think we are.
